Stills of performance-based film, The Passage (2022)
The Passage documents a theatrical dance performance in an immersive installation reimagining prehistoric caves and grottos. The installation is composed of 500 hand-carved ceramic tiles, ash, wood, and earth and constructed in the artist’s studio. The performance centers the Korean ancestral ssitkimgut ritual, during which the spirits of the deceased are cleansed and guided into the afterlife. In this adaptation, the choreography and costuming of the original dance are retained and recontextualized as personal meditations on cycles of rebirth and passing through sacred and bodily thresholds.
Originally performed live at the Museum of Art and Design and Christie's Inc.,The Passage was created in collaboration with artists Nicholas Oh, Antonius Bui, and dancer/choreographer Sohye Kim.
