Still of performance, Grandmother's Cave (2018)
Filmed in an immersive installation at Columbia University, Grandmother's Cave is a retelling of my relationship with my grandmother and her personal biography, through a series of narrative vignettes and ritual-based movements. The performances references the coastal village of her hometown, pearl divers (hanyeo), traditional herb gardens planted in the States, and homemade Korean dishes such as kimchi. In the performance, I am wearing her ceremonial garment, which was passed down to me.
The performance is also in memory of my grandmother, who not only was my primary caregiver during my formative years, but was also the link that connected our family to our ancestral spiritual practices and powerful matriarch.
The installation is made using materials: herbs, moss, food ingredients, plants, flowers, water, earth, pearl beads, glass vessels, silicone, urethane rubber, resin, wax, plaster, joint compound.
